Water Colors 101

This is a step-by-step course designed to introduce students to the beauty, transparency, and versatility of watercolor painting. The course provides a practical foundation in understanding watercolor materials, controlling water and pigment, and applying essential techniques to create expressive and visually appealing paintings.

Students will begin by exploring watercolor paints, brushes, papers, palettes, and other essential materials. They will learn how watercolors behave on paper and how the balance between water and pigment affects color intensity, transparency, edges, and texture.

The course gradually introduces essential watercolor techniques such as flat washes, graded washes, wet-on-wet painting, wet-on-dry painting, glazing, lifting, layering, and creating textures. Students will learn how to control water flow, preserve highlights, build color gradually, and create smooth transitions and atmospheric effects.

Important artistic concepts such as color harmony, values, light and shadow, form, depth, composition, and visual balance will be explored through practical exercises and projects. Students will also learn how to plan and develop a painting from initial sketching and color studies to final refinements.

Through structured exercises and creative projects, learners will gain confidence in handling watercolor paints and discover how to use the medium to create fresh, luminous, and expressive artworks.

By the end of the course, students will have a strong foundation in watercolor techniques and the practical skills needed to create, refine, and complete their own watercolor paintings.
