Overview
This is a step-by-step course designed to introduce students to the unique characteristics, techniques, and creative possibilities of soft pastel art. The course provides a practical foundation in handling soft pastels, understanding their behavior on different surfaces, and applying essential techniques to create vibrant and expressive artworks.
Students will begin by exploring soft pastels, suitable papers and surfaces, blending tools, fixatives, and other essential materials. They will learn how soft pastels differ from other color-based drawing mediums and how to take advantage of their rich pigmentation, softness, and blending capabilities.
The course gradually introduces essential techniques such as color application, layering, blending, feathering, scumbling, hatching, cross-hatching, and texture creation. Students will learn how to build color intensity, create smooth transitions, establish contrast, and develop depth through careful use of values and color relationships.
Important artistic concepts such as light and shadow, form, atmosphere, texture, composition, and visual balance will be explored through practical exercises and projects. Students will learn how to construct an artwork progressively, beginning with simple studies and advancing toward more complete and refined pastel compositions.
