Pencil Drawing 101
Learn the fundamentals of pencil drawing through line work, shapes, proportions, shading, textures, light, and observation while creating expressive artworks through practical exercises and projects.
Overview
This is a step-by-step course designed for anyone who wants to develop drawing skills from the very beginning. No previous drawing experience is required. The course establishes a strong foundation in observation, line work, shapes, proportions, shading, and the representation of light and form.
Students will begin by becoming familiar with pencils, erasers, drawing papers, sharpeners, and other essential materials. They will learn how to hold and control a pencil, create different types of marks, and understand how pressure, direction, and movement affect the quality of a drawing.
The course gradually introduces fundamental drawing techniques, including contour drawing, hatching, cross-hatching, blending, tonal shading, and creating textures. Students will learn to identify and construct basic shapes and forms before progressing toward more detailed subjects.
Important concepts such as proportion, perspective, light and shadow, values, depth, negative space, and composition will be explored through simple, practical exercises. Students will also learn how to observe subjects carefully and translate what they see into accurate and expressive drawings.
Through progressively structured projects, learners will apply their skills to objects, natural forms, and complete drawings while developing greater control, observation, patience, and confidence.
By the end of the course, students will have a strong foundation in pencil drawing and the practical skills needed to continue exploring more advanced drawing techniques and subjects.
