Oil Pastels 101

This is a step-by-step course designed to introduce students to the rich colors, smooth texture, and expressive possibilities of oil pastels. The course provides a practical foundation for understanding the medium, handling essential materials, and developing the techniques needed to create vibrant and detailed artworks.

Students will begin by exploring different types of oil pastels, suitable papers and surfaces, blending tools, and other essential materials. They will learn how to control pressure, strokes, layering, and color application to achieve different effects.

The course gradually introduces essential techniques such as blending, layering, color mixing, scumbling, hatching, cross-hatching, blending with tools, and creating textures. Students will learn how to combine colors effectively and build depth, highlights, shadows, and smooth tonal transitions.

Important concepts such as color relationships, light and shadow, form, texture, composition, and depth will be explored through practical exercises. Students will also learn how to develop an artwork progressively, from basic shapes and initial color placement to detailed layers and final refinements.

Through structured projects, learners will gain confidence in handling oil pastels and discover how different techniques can be combined to create expressive and visually rich artworks.

By the end of the course, students will have a strong foundation in oil pastel techniques and the confidence to create, refine, and complete their own oil pastel artworks.
